Pros

Got to work on a bunch of locally well-known brands, draft press releases first-hand, do actual pitching, attend cool media opportunities. My internship supervisor was friendly

Cons

Weird office vibes. This was before they moved and some time ago, but my internship supervisor's boss was not the friendliest. She also kicked me out of a meeting just because she and my supervisor had a difficult relationship with a client, which I overheard. She decided I wouldn't be allowed to sit in any more client meeting because she didn't want me to hear them having more difficult conversations with the client. My supervisor came up to me after and said she didn't agree with her boss's decision and apologized, noting it's the real world and that would've been a good learning experience in agency life. She said it had nothing to do with me. I hadn't even said a word as it was, just sat there and took notes. I agreed! I was 21 at the time, so I was an adult and capable of witnessing a difficult conversation with a client. It would have been a great opportunity to see how they navigated the situation. The other interns got to sit in on client calls the rest of the year (they weren't in that meeting.) I'm at an agency now and am the lead POC and client-facing for a major account. We deal with difficult situations all the time! It's just another day and another situation to overcome. Not sure why she had made such a big deal of it years ago, but it set a weird tone. It felt like I was being punished for something when I was a fly on the wall. Still odd to this day!

Pros

If you're just starting out in the PR/Comms industry and looking to gain lots of experience out the gate, Maroon PR is great. Being in an agency setting, you'll be exposed to lots of clients at once (anywhere from 4-7) and work closely with your Account Directors. Clients can range across industries from Sports and Retail to Nonprofit and Hospitality. The team is honestly fantastic, young, fun, and a great support system. Everyone really cares about each other and wants to see you succeed. In your role, you'll do a little bit of everything from public relations work to social and paid media work. There is a fun company culture that consists of team building activities, happy hours, etc.

Cons

Cons are very subjective and vary person to person. For me personally, it's a lot of work for very little pay/compensation. Personally, I have often felt extremely stressed or overwhelmed within my role, relatively consistently. Sometimes its not so bad, however that really depends on the time of year, clients, etc. I am in positions where I have to work overtime frequently to meet timely deadlines or to play catch-up. The salary is also very low/very underpaid. Again, cons are subjective - there are a lot of pros that come with Maroon PR (team, culture, type of work, etc.) but agency life is not for everyone.
