Pros

The students and teachers here are great. I love working with students one on one and in small groups, able to see them grow and change as the year goes on. The work is very rewarding. The teachers I work with are very positive and are essentially your lifeline when working at Manus. They will help you with learning the way of the school and how to best succeed.

Cons

This place does not foster positive environments between administration and employees. There is no communication other than waiting for an email at the end of your day to see what administration thought you did wrong during your time working. The emails are passive aggressive and don't offer any advice or means to change, they often word something like this: "I noticed today when I was in your classroom that you were doing xyz. I'm confused and concerned about this behavior as it was never discussed at all." There is no training to work here. The administration gives you a large book to work on that details the curriculum, but there is no assistance or mentoring or anything that resembles training in a normal sense. They do not tell you what they expect from you as an employee, it's a waiting game to see when you mess up and do something they don't approve of. This behavior can be as minimal as how you choose to read a book to your class, or how you choose to give instructions to your class.

Pros

*short workday *no take-home work *FANTASTIC student population I have never had a job that matters to me like this job does. I love going to work everyday to see my students. I love helping them learn and grow. I fully plan on returning next year!

Cons

The health insurance is expensive and there are no retirement benefits. The atmosphere at Manus is all about structure. The day is very regimented and the curriculum is set. This is both a major blessing and a curse sometimes; however, if you can learn to work within the system then you will do just fine. The student population thrives here! Both students and staff know what to expect and it works. If you're the kind of teacher who wants to spend 7 hours decorating your classroom to look like a jungle to match the book you are teaching, this is not going to be a good fit. If you want to work hard, teach a pre-planned curriculum based on decades of neuroscience and case studies, and focus on helping your students be the best they can be then you will be successful.
