Pros

- Most team members are friendly and personable across all departments - Some team members are extremely talented and are a joy to collaborate and work with - Most team members work for the greater good of the company, helping out one another to meet business goals - The company culture is pretty relax - Leadership (loosely) tries to fix operational and department issues - The product team is the most organized and impactful department because the director of product empowers his managers and team members to lead and own company projects and goals - Work with team members that are open and accepting to different world cultures, beliefs and traditions - Unlimited pto is nice

Cons

- Poor leadership (with the exception of the Product Director who actually empowers his team with project ownership) - Leadership is a 4-headed hydra with 4 cofounders that are not aligned together - Mango is a 15 year old company that still operates like a 2-year old startup - There are no real performance reviews and rewards for individual / company performance - a branded Mango coin has no real worth besides to the CEO - Leadership only cares about core values, not team or individual performance. You could be a high performing individual that takes initiative and ownership but if you don't exemplify the CEO’s core values, your work won't even get noticed - no learning and development budget. Basically, L&D budget is a monthly subscription to online classes. - Leadership likes to send out surveys but rarely defines anything actionable with the data. - Some middle managers are extremely bad at communication and lack technical know-how on the platforms and the team members they manage. There were a handful of energetic, creative and ambitious team members that all left due to poor management of talent. - No diversity initiatives - there’s an underlying “old boy’s club” that’s pervasive throughout the company. Longtime male employees could underperform and get away without even a notice by the founders or leadership team. But, if you’re a woman, you’ll have extra eyes on your performance and have higher expectations.

Mango Languages Response

We’d like to take some time to respond to this review: The positives that you listed about working with Mango and your frustrations. Starting with the positive things you listed, we agree that we have a fantastic team here at Mango that span over all the departments. The environment is friendly, personable, and individuals enjoy collaborating together when they have joint projects and initiatives. We work together to enhance Mango Languages and individuals use their unique talents and abilities to accomplish this joint effort that could never be accomplished alone. We value our Mango Team and are thankful for each and every individual, not only for their skills and abilities to advance the company, but to work together collaboratively to solve problems and to overcome obstacles together. Our employees come from various different backgrounds and have a desire to learn about others and their way of life. At Mango a majority of our employees are learning and studying the language and culture of a country they were not born in. They love to travel to visit family living in various parts of the world, explore new and unknown places, and support and help others through various relief and outreach efforts. Mango supports these efforts with their flexible schedule, unlimited PTO, work from home benefits, and their free Mango language and culture classes for employees. We have diverse backgrounds, beliefs, skills, talents, ideas, and thoughts here at Mango that help us work together to see from various perspectives and attack problems from various angles. We are proud of this diversity and encourage it. We believe your comments regarding Mangos owners are unfounded and express your personal frustrations, but not factual information. The ownership at this company cares very deeply for Mango, the employees, and for each other. They have taken careful consideration in working collaboratively together to ensure alignment for the good of the company. The company has been growing and thriving for the past twelve years and continues to do so. It is not perfect and we are continually making improvements as areas are identified that we need to continue to work on. We believe it is important to listen to the voice of those serving on the front lines with Mango and let them share their joys of working here, encouragements, frustrations, suggestions, and areas they wish to see improved in their workplace. Careful consideration is poured over reading, evaluating, and digesting the voice of our employees. Time is taken each year and quarter to come up with actionable steps to meet the most important issues. For example this year we have had a goal of enhancing our communication so everyone in the company is aware of what is happening and can see the overall picture of how their work plays a part in the bigger picture. Each quarter the company comes together to discuss the accomplishments that have taken place and the initiatives and goals for the next quarter, managers dig deeper into all of these areas in team meetings listening to feedback, addressing any areas of concern or improvement. Emails are sent out to describe new releases. We’ve had a lot of positive responses from this communication initiative from the Leadership Team to individual teams and will continue to proceed forward with this successful initiative. This is just one of many initiatives taken on to address the suggestions and encouragements of our employees. In terms of performance reviews and caring about the performance of our individuals and teams, this is something that is very important to the owners, leadership, and managers at Mango. Performance reviews are routinely done each year in which individuals talk through what is going well, areas for improvement, and initiatives for the future. Individuals are encouraged to seek out professional development opportunities to help them grow in the areas they are interested and passionate about. Budget is set aside for this purpose and used by a number of our employees. The values that Mango is established on are very important to us and we want everyone in the company to be aligned in these areas. We believe they are not just for the good of the company, but the individuals working here as well and enhance the working environment of each individual. The core values of Mango are to benefit everyone and when we are all working together to accomplish it makes for a strong and healthy environment for us all to work in. Overall our values are for everyone to take personal responsibility to create a healthy environment for everyone around them. We believe in the importance of initiative and ownership and we believe all of us should be pursuing excellence, for ourselves, our teams, and the overall good of the company we all work for. We believe in the success of everyone working for our company no matter their gender. We hold everyone to a high standard and expect them to do their best. Their voices are heard, evaluated, and appropriate actionable steps are taken. We value diversity, as a language learning company, and as stated above have employees and contractors with various different backgrounds working for and with Mango. The hiring team is taking initiatives and attending diversity focused events to target underrepresented groups. In summary we love our company, we believe in the people that work here, and we are continually taking initiative to grow in creating a healthy and joyful environment for those working for Mango.

Pros

There is a lot to like here. The people are supportive, collaborative, and invested in the company's success. The culture is built on trust and transparency. We work remotely with no micromanagement, expectations are high but reasonable, and the compensation and benefits are generous. The leadership team is what stands out most. They're hardworking and humble, engaged in the day-to-day, and approachable in a way that's rare at their level. I've felt valued since day one, and I'm proud of the products and their potential to enrich the lives of those we serve. In a decade across several employers, I haven't found anywhere close.

Cons

As with any smaller company, you'll sometimes have to take on a task that doesn't have an obvious home, and the pace can pick up during busier periods. But if you enjoy variety in your day, it's a great place to grow.
