Pros
MITRE is a surprisingly large company and that size is in response to the size of the government the company works with. The different FFRDCs are diverse and range in size from small engagements to very large. This diversity means there's a lot of different work to choose from. Many at MITRE have re-invented themselves more than once switching from something like communications engineering to data science. The training and broad sponsor base makes that possible so long as you're motivated.
Cons
It's possible to become complacent and bored. Sometimes it's hard to re-invent yourself and the sponsors that you're familiar with. Difficult to advance further than principal.
