Pros
Long Island Geese Control is a large company, covering properties across Suffolk and Nassau. You work in all weather and with a dog, enjoying an active job and traveling to gorgeous locations. Hours are comfortable and management is understanding enough to adapt to your availability. For the right person this active lifestyle, although rather isolating as a solo-contractor position (after a 2-week shadowing/training period), will be a dream.
Cons
It should be noted that despite the empathy many staff show each other and the dogs, the same respect is not shown by the owner. A flexible and cooperative man, he is nonetheless willing to cut costs at the expense of animals and employees, even if allowing the problem to metastasize will cause larger problems farther down the line. Unlike the pristine and loving Bayshore kennel, the Nissequogue kennel is an absolute sty, littered with feces, where the dogs get little to no exercise and are kept in extremely confined conditions. One of the dogs here was caught eating towel, which had been put out as a blanket. After I brought the risk of this behavior to the attention of the manager (cloth is a huge choking hazard for dogs, worse if gets stuck in the digestive tract, possible requiring surgery), no action was taken. The next day I worked with the same dog, who proceeded to vomit up the better part of a towel in the car. Never mind the smell; the dog could have had a fatal encounter due not to ill-intent, but utter indifference. I understand that these are working dogs, not pets, but such conditions are deplorable. If walking into this kennel doesn't break your heart, I beg you to see it from an investment point of view. What's the point of buying and training professional dogs that you then leave to waste away in filth, potentially getting sick, injured or killed? Additionally, with 200miles a day the norm for your vehicle, service is a regular concern. They have a favored auto-shop, but the boss will conduct maintenance on his own if he thinks he can get away with it. I once had the privilege of driving after one of his operations. The battery was not connected properly, and I almost lost control of the vehicle at high speeds in the middle of Sunrise Highway as it intermittently lost power. Employee beware; you are taking your life into your own hands with this equipment.
