Pros

If you are well-liked, don't cause a fuss and are willing to take on a lot of extra work outside your job role (which is never accurately defined), you can make a lot of money and get decent benefits. You can also work a schedule that is flexible most of the time, when you are not traveling. The are some really amazing staffers here, who are fun to work with and many will likely become long-term friends. If you have a good manager, you can learn a lot about the field and really progress in your skills and knowlege.

Cons

There is zero consistency between teams - one team might be micromanaged by a tyrant with no actual experience, proficiency or aptitude to do the work or be a leader, and every day is filled with anxiety, disappointment, and often fear of retribution. On other teams, you can be challenged, rewarded, fulfilled, mentored and make real connections with your coworkers. If there is any kind of personnel issue, you are out of luck, bc there is no HR department and the people contracted to handle sexual harassment, bullying, racism, etc., are ill-equipped, and hired by leadership to protect those in power, at all costs. Not only do their values of social justice not live within the inner workings of the org, they are consistently changing their values to bend with whatever way the wind is blowing this year. When Trump waged war on diversity, equity and inclusion, we were suddenly no longer an anti-racist organization, even though that was supposed to be a CORE VALUE that informed all of our work. I think if you don't stand up for what's right when times are hard, and you can only say that Black Lives Matter in the wake of George Floyd, then you were never real to begin with. Additionally, every two years for the last decade plus, (since it's founding) there is a "re-organization" of the structure, a "recalibrating" of the mission/focus of work and a mass lay-off/re-assignment of staff. They cannot decide which way to go and can't stick with anything long enough to see if it will work. People go through a 2-month hiring process only to be laid off 6 mos later. It's mass confusion across the org most days.
