Pros
FOH team are mostly friendly creative people to work with and build friendships with.
You get to see a wide variety of live music, podcasts, poetry, and talks.
Flexibility with getting shift cover if you have other freelance work to juggle. ie. acting castings/auditions; gig bookings etc.
Cons
The unpredictability of casual hours - shifts been cancelled and no compensation if over 24 hours notice. It's a precarious way to make a reliable income.
Not quite the London Living Wage rate per hour.
FOH staff do need more protection at times from verbally abusive, or entitled customers/audience members.
Definitely a glass ceiling in being promoted internally from FOH or BOH to head office positions. It is a small charity that needs more funding to deliver the programming more effectively, and to expand.
