Pros
Kid power has good intentions as do some of the people they hire. There is a lot of opportunity to grow as an individual and educator.
Cons
They are incredibly disorganized and lack communication. The workplace culture is very toxic. Sexual harassment by staff members and staff at the schools take place regularly and not only is nothing done about it but it is kept secret by most. The turnover of teachers is high and the higher ups don’t care that students that are in high need of positive influences in their lives, see 3-4 different faces in a year. It’s a revolving door and rightly so because there is little to no support provided for the teachers. The training is far below any standard that I’ve ever seen. Teachers scream at students and bully them often. Teacher/student relationships straddle the line of inappropriateness. There is NO cultural competency. I couldn’t believe some of the things that would come out of the mouths of my supervisor, peers, and even the executive director ON THE CLOCK. I was shocked since most of the schools they serve are 90-98% people of color. There is no social justice education. It just seems like a bunch of people trying to “do good” but no idea where to start. There is no foundation, no values, or general mission for you to look to when you are struggling within the organization. The discipline policy for students was called a “three strike policy” by one of the directors. Completely absurd to call it that when black & brown students are affected by the justice system daily. Horrible experience.
