Pros

Nice location in downtown Chicago

Cons

Terrible management. Management consists of the CEO and CFO. They are extreme micro-managers. I'll start with the CEO. Jim is in love with his own voice and opinion. If he can express a point using a single word, he'd opt to use 10 words instead. He has grand concepts and visions, but has zero ability to execute or plan and see a plan through to completion. All of June Media's websites are outdated. And June Media isn't able to keep up with it's competitors. The company is a sinking ship. The CFO is the true decision maker at the company. She's been with the company for over 9 years. It wasn't even a media company when she started. At this point, it's all about self preservation for her. She's the highest paid employee at the company, making more than even the CEO. She micro-manages every aspect of the company, even areas where she has no expertise or experience. Rarely does she consult and ask for advice. She just dictates, never owning her own mistakes but quick to harshly and publicly criticize others. She micro manages editorial, design, tech, sales, finance, and everything else. She's truly what holds the company back. There are some great employees at June Media if given the ability to freely do their jobs they could really turn the company around. But the CFO stifles their efforts. She couldn't get her title or salary at any other company, so she injects herself into every process to maintain relevancy at June Media.

Pros

June Media's apparently been going through a major transition from a sleepy website and marketing company to something bigger and better. I came in during this transition, so one of the great "pros" was seeing the changes from the inside out. I worked in Chicago, so I'm mostly commenting about the experience in that office (not NYC). The content editors in Chicago and the senior management in NYC can seem a bit hard driving at times, but by the end I thought that they really cared and were focused on taking the steps to create a great media company. As an intern, I also thought that my work could have an immediate and real impact.

Cons

The company has high expectations for interns (and editors), so a role at this company may not be for some people who just want to check a box on their resume. I was told that these higher expectations came in with the new CEO this year, who apparently started cleaning house when he took over (which might explain a couple of the other company reviews!). Never met the guy but I believe that the editors thought he was smart and very aggressive. Still, if you have high expectations for yourself and want to do real work, this is a great assignment. Not sure that interns are really considered for jobs at June Media, but a couple of the editors said that they might be open to considering it in the future. I think that would be a really positive development.
