Pros

It's a job. There isn't a lot of "pros" about JCJ. I did enjoy working with my peers, great people with good hearts, all worried about hanging on to their jobs.

Cons

Avoid this firm unless you are absolutely desperate for a job. They are nothing more than a commodity service business run by non-architects. $$$ drive every decision. They fail horribly in trying to be a national firm and do not have the savvy or understanding of how to successfully practice as a multi-office architecture firm. Everything revolves the corporate office in Hartford. They call themselves an ESOP, but it is really Peter Stevens’ company (he is not an architect or even a designer). JCJ is just part of the alphabet soup of companies posing as architecture design firms. And don’t let them fool you about being an employee/owner. Ownership means nothing, the stock value is practically zero, you have no say in business decisions and the door you entered through is a big revolving door. You will probably be kicked out the door as soon as they are done with you. They have a high turn-over rate. Just remember you were warned!

Pros

Collaborative and Supportive Work Environment: Employees appreciate the team-oriented atmosphere, describing it as a "team/family atmosphere" where management is approachable and supportive of personal and professional goals. Opportunities for Professional Growth: The firm's entrepreneurial culture encourages employees to innovate and take initiative, providing opportunities for those who are self-motivated to advance their careers. Employee Ownership Structure: As an employee-owned company (ESOP), JCJ fosters a collaborative atmosphere where employees are encouraged to contribute ideas and feel a sense of ownership in the firm's success.

Cons

Frequent Layoffs: Some employees have reported concerns about job stability due to periodic mass layoffs, which can create anxiety and a distracting work environment. High Workload and Tight Deadlines: The fast-paced nature of the industry and the firm's project demands may lead to employees working well over 40 hours a week, often feeling overwhelmed by the workload and pressing deadlines. Limited Internal Training Opportunities: There are indications that the firm offers minimal internal training for advancement, with some employees feeling they lack adequate support to develop new skills or transition into different roles within the company.
