Fun work, but my views of the company sadly overwhelmingly negative - Subtitle Translator Iyuno Employee Review

Pros

The work itself is fun and creative if you like translation/subtitling. Most colleagues are nice, helpful, and friendly. I personally had great line managers. Okay Covid-19 response. Fairly good company-wide communications. Free candy, fruit and coffee/tea/milk available in the kitchen. Flexible hours (within reason). During the pandemic we've all been allowed to work from home, and it has always been an option for people before the pandemic happened, too (but I can't say for sure that will continue).

Cons

There is no natural way to advance your career within the company as a subtitler/subtitle editor/translator/proofreader - the only way to go is towards client or project management. Salaries are generally low at entry level, and the salary progression is very slow. Upper management has no or very little idea what people on the production level actually do. From the top, the company is generally an uncaring environment. No real respect for the employees on the production level. The work is often stressful and you will receive very little or no appreciation. If you try to raise issues, they will be taken seriously by your own line managers, but will get stuck on the way up the management chain. The 'Legacy Iyuno' people/managers have no understanding of the work the 'Legacy BTI' people do. Upper management is too eager/quick to implement changes that don't work on a practical level. Parts of management don't like to take responsibility - they just shuffle the blame onto others. Too many company-wide emails that don't relate to the recipient(s). Absolutely no trust in the employees whatsoever.

Pros

At the beginning, I had stable work and didn’t have to worry about making ends meet. Iyuno was enough as my main income, and I could live comfortably.

Cons

Over time, my workload was gradually reduced without any explanation, despite having five years of experience and consistently high-quality work. I was effectively replaced by new translators while being kept in the dark. This has left me uncertain about my future, and unfortunately, I can no longer rely on Iyuno as a primary source of income. After years of dedication and turning down other opportunities to stay loyal, this outcome is very disappointing.

We value the expertise and commitment of our freelance community and are sorry to hear this was your experience. Work volumes in our industry can shift based on client demand, language needs, and project mix. That said, we recognize that changes without clear communication can be frustrating, especially for long-standing contributors. We expect our teams to engage with freelancers respectfully and transparently, and we do not support practices that leave contributors feeling overlooked or disregarded. Your feedback highlights an area where we must continue to improve.
