Pros

The people I worked with on a day to day basis were great. The people who made up the GIS team were the only reason I came in every day.

Cons

Before continuing with my rant, I suggest reading the other two reviews that are currently posted for this company and ask yourself: Do they sound like actual reviews from real employees? Or does it seem like the founder of the company wrote some nice things? Now consider why a company owner may be motivated to post fake reviews on Glassdoor. From the beginning, I felt very disconnected from and dismissed by upper management. Maybe this is to be expected at a larger company, but Intermx is small enough for everyone to know each other. Despite this, I'm pretty sure the CTO (who I saw at least weekly) never bothered to learn my name. The founder and head of the company seems to think that buying up other companies and spending money on useless things was more important than making decisions and being involved. We were often left wondering the direction we were meant to be going in because he was often very difficult to get a hold of. When a decision was made, it was always likely that a contradictory decision would be made within a week. This meant the GIS team was often being pulled in several directions at once. We'd spend a week updating our workflow to the new standards which were seemingly set arbitrarily, only for the standards to change without being consulted. Every project I worked on felt sisyphean because work just kept stacking up and the powers that be kept changing their minds. At the beginning of quarantine in the US, most of the company began working at home. We had a company wide meeting to discuss the successes of the previous year and the future of Intermx. After being told the business was doing well, millions of dollars had been exchanged, and exciting new clients were in the works, we were promised that nobody would be laid off. Less than 2 months later, two full time analysts were let go and I, who worked as an intern and was told I'd be joining the team at the end of my internship, was informed I'd be laid off shortly after. I understand that nobody could have predicted the impact COVID would have on our business, but perhaps you shouldn't start a meeting with "Business is great, we're making big bucks, none of you should worry about your future here!' only to fire 2 employees less than 2 months later To add insult to injury, over half my paychecks were several days late. Once is a mistake, twice is a pattern, and 5+ times is a giant red flag with a siren blaring "Get out while you still can!" So again I invite you to ask yourself a question or two. Do you want to work at a company with management that can't make a decision and stick with it? Are you alright with working on a project for several weeks, only to be told you need to go back and fix your work because they made some seemingly arbitrary decision without consulting your team? Are you ready to badger your supervisor for several days in a row because you still haven't been paid? If so, then put in an application! Because Intermx surely won't disappoint you, assuming disappointment is what you signed up for.

Intermx Response

I want to thank you for posting this review. You have brought to light some real areas for improvement we can make for our internship program. You are correct that we are a small, self-funded company and anyone from intern to most senior positions should feel involved and heard in our organization. I want this to be true no matter how small we are today or how large we may grow in the future. You raised a few issues that I think need a specific response or clarification so I would like to address them clearly. 1. Regarding late payments: Interns in our internship program are not full time employees and are not on our payroll but are paid as contractors and because of that, pay periods do not go through our payroll software. We had unfortunate turnover with our bookkeeper for personal reasons of their own and managing intern pay periods fell directly on me. At the time, I was not aware that the internship program accounting was being managed outside of our payroll system and therefore caused some of the delays. I dropped the ball and I’m sorry. 2. Regarding lay-offs: The two full-time analysts you mentioned were offered and accepted new roles at Intermx. They are both still employed today and I, personally have been working with them daily. I welcome you to reach out to either of them to verify. 3. Regarding the statement that you were laid off: I want to be clear that an internship is not a guarantee of future employment. Even though we only offered employment to one of the three interns in your class, all three of you in the internship program were provided the opportunity to work through the semester and we met with your manager to make sure that you would be provided the opportunity to work the hours required by your school for appropriate credit. Your internship ended as any internship would conclude, you were not “laid off”. Going forward, we will work to improve our communication on the difference between internships and full-time employment so that this is better understood. 4. Regarding the other reviews on this site: I am not certain who wrote all of them but the employee that published the last positive review before the one I am responding to let me know she did. She was not one of the founders nor was she part of the management team and she reviewed Intermx unprompted and on her own volition. Lastly, regarding shifting needs of the business, COVID-19 has been an extraordinarily difficult time for the country, especially impacting small businesses. We are not perfect, and I know that I have made mistakes in the past and will most likely make many more in the future, but I am very proud of the fact that our team has been able to pull through this difficult time and adjust gracefully to the changing needs of our customers as they endure the impact of the virus as well. Intermx head count has not only stayed constant but with the addition of your peer and some other positions we have actually grown, not reduced, our head count, creating jobs in the process while many in the country were being lost. The dedication of the employees at Intermx are 100% the reason we have been able to do this.

Pros

Intermx is a fast-paced and rapidly growing company. There is never a shortage of opportunities to learn new skills or complete new projects. The work environment is ideal for self-starters and those who enjoy tackling complex problems. The Intermx team is diverse and comes from varying fields of expertise. This creates a unique dynamic where different points of view and methods are implemented to create products. Below are a few perks I've enjoyed while working here: * Time off during holidays * Support from owners, as mentors and financially, to pursue higher education * Flexibility to work from home * Generous bonus structure * Company outings (i.e. holiday parties, dinners, etc.)

Cons

Not much. The workload can be significant at times, but I have always found support when needed. There are growing pains as with any start-up company, but as the company grows I have seen the owners work to alleviate these strains and implement policies to provide additional structure.

Pros

+ Tight-knit, friendly, and smart team/co-workers + Managers embrace critical thinking and take advice on solutions to challenges with the tech stack + Openness to prototype and explore varying technologies to solve problems + Diverse and modern tech stack allows you to develop and hone new and existing skills + Rapidly evolving services and application + Lots of different projects and avenues in the company means you're rarely pigeon-holed into specific tasks + Managers and co-founders are almost always available day or night 7 days a week + Able to create new avenues for deliverables during COVID pandemic shows resiliency of the product + Diverse and accepting co-workers

Cons

- Company takes on complex and diverse projects with intense deadlines. These deadlines mean that if the project is falling behind schedule, you may be asked to stop what you were working on and see it through, occasionally for weeks on end. This can also lead to a "get it out the door" mentality and initial deliveries are unrepeatable and unscalable which yields technical debt and occasional half-completed projects - Managers and co-founders are always on, so early morning and weekend Slack messages come in with varying senses of urgency
