Pros

I worked as a consultant and then became a staff member over the course of my 5 years at the institution. There are many intelligent and hardworking folks at this Bank who deeply believe in international devleopment and want to promote and build it within Latin America and the Caribbean. Working with them and the clients wihin LAC were the highlights of my career.

Cons

Highly competitive workplace, long hours (sometimes extending into the weekends and during vacation time). If you are not a fluent Spanish speaker, growth (and acceptance) within the institution will be difficult. Too many siloed operations and divisions. People at HQ have an advantage over those posted in the Country Offices.

Pros

You get to work with elitist Spanish speaking Latin Americans who are xenophobic for people that speak other languages, who have processes, paper pushing and career progression as major objective, not real development outcomes (eradicate extreme poverty & improve quality of life in LAC).

Cons

Bureaucracy. Outdated development agency. Abusive to and misclassifying contractors. People who don’t know what they are doing or talking about. Delivers trash projects and pulls impoverished countries further into national debt. Technocratic and too much focus on metrics, not impoverished people’s lived experience.
