Pros

Lots of opportunity to work on different projects in wide number of areas so things can stay interesting. There are some very smart people working there. If you are interested in research, there are a lot of opportunities. If you win a project, it is your baby to do with as you please.

Cons

Most of the company revenue comes from government SBIR grants, so you are always chasing funding for projects. You will spend 1/4 of your time writing proposals, or helping other people to write proposals. It does not matter how good or commercially viable your proposal idea is, if you don't win the money, you will never work on the project. IAI does not have any substantial revenue from products, and internal money is rarely invested in developing new ideas. Internal money only goes to projects that have been previously funded through other proposals for 2-3 years. Senior management is happy being a SBIR grant company in order to make money for the owners, and is adverse to taking risks that would let them grow.

Pros

Intelligent Automation is a unique technology firm to work at. As a small business, approximately 150 employees, there is an opportunity to wear as many or as few hats as you are interested in. With all of the cool projects actively being investigated, any employee can generally express interest and take some role in any project. Most employees are very educated and self-motivating, so you can feel confident in depending on your team. On a typical day, I almost always collaborate with others on solving challenging problems as well as make progress on the day to day work. Management is committed to transparency at all levels. There are regular meetings where status is given on the firm's portfolio as well as the award pipeline. Management is also committed to a comfortable family/work/life balance. The firm has a social committee that sponsors regular events to bring employees families together and have fun. There are also clubs for just about every activity you might want to do, i.e. soccer, tennis, biking, skiing, etc... The hardest part of my job include keeping up with new technologies while juggling multiple projects. While this is hard, it makes me excited to continue to come to work. The most enjoyable part of my job is getting to work closely with so many talented researches, engineers, and analysts hoping that some of that talent rubs off on me.

Cons

While there are a lot of benefits to the exciting work at Intelligent Automation, it isn't for everyone. You should be comfortable working on multiple projects in parallel.
