7yThis employee was not our shop manager and was actually hired in as an intern. He had absolutely no professional IT experience coming in and came from working at Panera Bread. All of this was fine with us because he had a love of technology and demonstrated a positive attitude. He was very rough around the edges when it came to client interaction, but we trained and coached him and he was steadily improving. During this time, he was reviewed regularly and paid an increasing amount based on his skill level and experience. After only working with us for a couple years, he ended up just getting mad that he couldn't make more money faster without continuing to earn a higher skill level. He became bitter and self righteous about it - demanding more salary than was reasonable. He ended up quitting to find another path. A note about how we pay: we use payscale.com and other market research engines to keep our pay in the top 75th percentile.
