Pros
Wonderful work culture & environment at INDOT. There are 6 districts, plus a central office, and each location can vary in terms of culture, but overall there is just something special about INDOT. Most employees seem to love what they do and are passionate about innovation and continuous improvement. It’s an organization with dedicated employees who want to provide stellar service to the public and who do it with few resources and below-market salaries.
Cons
State government can entail a lot of layers of oversight and things can move slow. You are also asked to do a lot with little resources. Growth and development can sometimes be stagnant. Additionally, decisions on salary & benefits are not in the hands of managers, but are controlled by the Governor’s office and State Personnel Department. Similarly, certain procurement or purchasing decisions are held under IDOA. State government certainly comes with challenges, but there are many positives and many dedicated employees who want to serve the public and are willing to work through the red tape, layers of approval, lack of funding, etc., to better the state of Indiana.
