Pros

Many, majority of people are passionate and professional idealists working for the better world. People truly believe in the mandate and this makes the working environment inspirational and informal. Working directly with the national societies, with the volunteers and with the communities brings flesh to the desk job.

Cons

There are many so called development cowboys that rule the game - the recruitment, the assignments and the procedures - of the organisation. In certain delegations and national societies there are people working with their own personal, financial or political interests in mind. This causes delay or direct standstill of projects and work, complicates things and leads to people not feeling motivated or empowered.

Pros

The UNGA is a busy time at the UN, this provides a lot of excellent experience. The team works well and tries its best to ensure it is a beneficial one. Unlike many internships related to the UN, it is paid a stipend, which makes a difference

Cons

The stipend is not quite enough to live on, but it is fair for 3 days a week.

Pros

Friendly and inspiring environment. You really feel at the center of humanitarian work and that you can contribute to concrete impacts for vulnerable people.

Cons

Management does not always coach employees in new roles and too much turnover. Difficulties in balancing work and family life when you're hired on a contract basis.
