Pros

Working as a GIS Intern at Hopeworks in Camden has been an incredibly rewarding experience. From day one, the team created a supportive environment where I felt encouraged to learn, ask questions, and challenge myself. The hands-on training in GIS software, data management, and map production helped me grow both technically and professionally. What makes Hopeworks stand out is how much they invest in young people. They don’t just teach technical skills—they help you build confidence, communication, and workplace readiness. I got to work on real projects that actually made an impact in the community, which made the work feel meaningful and motivating. The staff and fellow interns were always willing to help, and the feedback they gave pushed me to do better every week. I also appreciated the focus on personal development, career coaching, and the positive, uplifting culture that Hopeworks prides itself on. Overall, my time as a GIS Intern at Hopeworks was an amazing opportunity. I gained valuable experience, expanded my skills, and felt genuinely supported along the way. I would absolutely recommend Hopeworks to anyone looking to grow in GIS, tech, or professional development in general.

Cons

One drawback to working as a GIS Intern at Hopeworks is that, while they offer strong training and support, they can’t guarantee a job afterward. This isn’t necessarily their fault—job placement depends on external factors like employer hiring needs, the job market, and individual circumstances—but it can still be disappointing for interns who expect employment to be a direct next step. Hopeworks does everything they can to prepare you, from technical training to professional development, but the final step—actually getting hired—is ultimately outside their control. Some interns land positions quickly, while others may need more time or face a tougher job search. It’s important to go in with realistic expectations: Hopeworks gives you tools and opportunities, but not guaranteed outcomes. Still, the experience is valuable; you just have to understand that job placement varies and isn’t promised.

Pros

Help with personal stuff (applying for SNAP, entrepreneurship classes, professional dress) *tip for potential trainees* Stay focused on yourself and your life and your career path. They have resources available but you have to follow up multiple times and remind them that you need help with. (Getting a birth certificate, social, mental health resources) There are real networking opportunities & they have partnerships with other companies. They have Interview help, resume help (everyone’s advice is different -ask someone who actually looks at resumes for a living)

Cons

After you finish modules ($1,050 total) $15/hour 6 month internship. job market is hard right now. (03/2025) Hard to balance work and finding a job. (But in each internship it’s different) Builds up expectations of how they can support you and sometimes the reality is not what it seems. Don’t expect too much. A Program is maybe getting pushed back (in philly, not sure about Camden) with no official date being given, only an estimated timeframe. an example of building expectations with no follow through, keeping everyone wondering/waiting. Building expectations for those you’re offering help to so they feel hopeful, while at the same time leaving them in limbo. Similar experience with trying to obtain some resources. Internship work felt like busy work.
