Pay could have been better

I learned a lot about customer service; specifically, how NOT to treat customers. I learned a lot about the design/build industry; specifically, how to recognize shoddy workmanship and shortcuts. I learned a lot about the laws in the state of TN with regards to contracting--specifically that any project over 25k requires the bidding contractor to have a LICENSE. I met several talented people; most of whom left as quickly as I did.

1. The management fails to communicate effectively with employers, contractors, laborers, and vendors. Guidelines and operations are unclear and constantly revised. Lack of communication seems to be customers' most common complaint. 2. Management/operations mismanages cash flow. One customer's down payment will be applied towards another customer's project. The company's failure to pay its vendors in a timely fashion delays projects on a regular basis. Employees are asked to "hold" paychecks when funds are low. 3. The company contracts unlicensed labor. Employees have unwittingly broken the law by composing bids over 25k without a contractor license number printed on the bid, and sold labor services of unlicensed contractors on projects over 25k. This is against the law in the state of TN. The company advertises "Your Showroom for Dreaming, Your Contractor for Doing." (Licenses can be checked at verify.tn.gov) 4. Designer pay is based on a 'draw vs. commission' schedule that is complicated and unclear. During my year at Home Expo Design Center, neither myself nor any other designer ever received a commission. BUYER/EMPLOYEE BEWARE. THIS IS AN ILLEGITIMATE OPERATION.
