Pros

I learned a lot in regards to digital media and a good place to get your byline started.

Cons

The Hollywood Reporter is probably one for the fakest places to work in the industry. There were a lot of people in management positions who didn’t know what they were doing or didn’t have enough experience to be in a managerial role. Also it was disturbing to see how much people were secretive about their work and guarded their jobs. No opportunity to move up and young people are overworked and underpaid. HR is a mess and the new management is clueless as to who should still be working there. Also there is NO diversity so they do not practice what they preach.

Pros

I was an editorial intern for THR. Interns are tasked with transcribing interviews (did a lot of this), research for writers doing a feature story, attaining documents from various outside locations, and drafting spread sheets. I really enjoyed getting a full 360 perspective of how a magazine publication operated, sitting in on their editorial meetings was interesting and beneficial in giving me an idea of just how fast paced of a work climate it was. I grew as a writer and as a young professional as I was treated like one by the staff.

Cons

Man, what a depressing work place. While I think it's great that everyone is so focused on their own work, it's not conducive to a collaborative or consequently an easy going vibe throughout the office. I get it, the newsroom doesn't warrant mindless chatter when things are going on all the time and events need to be covered but the cliques were evident, the office politics were perturbing, and the superficiality of the staff was enough to make me lose interest in the company fast. While it may be the right fit for some, I came out of it knowing it wasn't for me.
