Pros

Direct experience developing specialized software and algorithms for large scale biological data analysis, including DNA and protein sequences.

Cons

Despite handling complex analytical problems within a scientific context, SDE1s are treated without autonomy. Experienced engineers are micromanaged on every line of code, estimation timeline, and documentation update. There's a heavy internal politics and rigid, top down directives. The integration of software components into complete genomic systems is constantly derailed by shifting administrative objectives rather than sound engineering principles. You are pressured to accept unreasonable workloads under constant surveillance. The environment here is highly insular, how skewed the workplace standards.

Pros

There is a strong sense of camaraderie among the lab teams and a shared commitment to the scientific work.

Cons

The workplace faces significant hurdles regarding employee retention and professional culture. There is a noticeable lack of a standard benefits and a shortage of the resources necessary to perform roles effectively. Internal communication is inconsistent, which often leads to an unorganized work environment. The management style is restrictive rather than empowering, leaving little room for professional development. While the staff works incredibly hard to support one another and improve the atmosphere, there is a disconnect between leadership and the well-being of the team.
