Pros

- 100% Remote - Individual contributions can have a big impact on the product - Team off-sites - Company is transparent about direction and finances

Cons

Negative Culture - Culture of blame leaves employees playing hot potato. Toxic personalities are allowed to continue their behavior unchecked likely due to “bus-factor”. - Work Life Balance – Lack of project management leads to the belief that everything should take “5 minutes”. Chronic under estimation of projects and overwork to meet those unrealistic deadlines is the norm. - Quantity over quality – Code quality and maintainability is not valued. Fast work done sloppily is encouraged in order to chase short-term revenue. - Technical Debt – Technical debt does not get paid down instead it gets added to. - Poor Management - Employees are promoted to engineering management positions without proper training or experience. That can make for a very negative work environment if you are their direct report.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. It is important for us to hear what we are doing well and what we could improve upon. It's great to hear that our core values of transparency, operating 100% remotely, and enabling impactful contributions from the team are appreciated here as a pros. We have been working hard to improve our internal processes and we've made great strides in the areas you have raised as concerns. We have taken a two-pronged approach to tech debt where we aggressively decline to move new initiatives forward that incur new tech debt and we include spikes in sprints to plan the work to pay down existing tech debt. Our pointing system is now entirely in the hands of the engineering teams performing the work, which goes a long way toward putting realistic point values and timelines on projects. While no pointing system is perfect, it puts the control in the hands of those who have the best information on level of effort required for an initiative. We have also implemented a retrospective process into our sprints as a way to neutrally evaluate what went well in a sprint and what opportunities we have to improve processes for the next time. Within the past year, we have implemented a new manager program that combines training with an employee culture and management software platform that supports all managers with key resources to facilitate strong communication with their team members. While we have made a ton of progress over the past year, we can always do better and appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. -Jess

Pros

- Wonderful people to work with - Flexible work hours - Decent pay for the market

Cons

- Direct management and top level management are not on the same page. They do not communicate with you if they have a problem with what you are working on. - Constantly shifting priorities, change expectations for projects, and are more focused on getting new features out fast than well done, making older code brittle, hard to work with and prone to issues. - No project managers means multiple bugs or features might be worked on at the same time duplicating work without the engineers knowing. - Single point of failure on one or two people being available to help with issues because of overly complex code that is never given the time needed to actually fix things. - If the company leaders feel like you are unneeded they will fire you for "performance" without any kind of previous communication or using tools to make sure a person aligns with expectations. You can have a great performance review and be fired a couple months later.
