Corporate mentality pretending to cultivate "community" - Anonymous employee High Mountain Institute Employee Review

Pros

Students are given wonderful learning opportunities in and out of the classroom.

Cons

Workplace culture is very white and very affluent; DEI efforts are superficial at best, deceitful at worst; Admin lacks humility and grace when they make mistakes; "Community" is felt amongst students but staff are dispensable. POC applicants, be sure to get insights from other POC (if there are any) about their experiences.

Pros

Amazing program--students' lives are changed for the better each semester; Strong culture of feedback; emphasis on outdoor recreation; culture of "getting the job done" instead of sitting at your desk from 9-5 (it is completely acceptable to go on a run or ski in the middle of the work day); passionate coworkers; beautiful scenery; very high-achieving students who are very bought into the program

Cons

By virtue of HMI being located in a rural town, the pay is lower than equivalent jobs in cities. Additionally, since it is a boarding school, the faculty and some staff have some evening and weekend responsibilities. In many ways this is a more demanding job than at a typical day school, but the superior student outcomes and emphasis on the outdoors make it worth it. Faculty have to spend many weeks a year backpacking with students, which can take a toll on a person after a few years.
