Pros

Supportive colleagues Working from home Exposure to tricky, difficult stakeholders which is great for experience

Cons

The promotion of overworking has to stop. When you see that this business is “inclusive” and supports people from “all walks of life” you think you are going into a business that is supportive and understanding. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. The constant overload of work is insane. More than one member of staff have had to take time out for a week or two at a time due to burnout. Claim to be diversity and inclusion specialists but simply use this as a tool to get more business. Work with one client you’re being pushed to put “diverse candidates” in front of them with a compromise on skill set whereas some other partners have voiced they don’t care about D&I and we still continue to work with them. It’s a tick box exercise when it comes to D&I. There is no training, no speakers and no partnerships from a D&I perspective which is what the business is founded on. Go figure. If you’re a popular figure in this business you will be praised and looked after, if you’re the latter, expect to work your butt off with little to no recognition. Salaries are terrible for the work that is expected to put in. Expect to be working 4 different roles in one role and then deliver on each area impeccably. It is not humanly possible to be so overloaded that you can deliver on everything. One of the founders made it clear to the business that they do not like the word “capacity” (they said this in the weekly all hands meetings on more than one occasion) and this is something that they are not willing to listen to as everyone is busy. This just shows the way people drown in this business, because you’re not allowed to express that you’re at full capacity.

We listen to all the feedback we receive, it's the only way we can continue to learn and grow as an employer. Hidden as a business is just coming into our 4th year and 2 of those have been working through a global pandemic (as a start-up), and we are incredibly proud of what we have achieved to date, and the work we are doing with some amazing clients. This 'review' however comes across as vitriolic, so I would like to reframe what you have said with another perspective… 1. We care about people’s wellbeing and mental health and we offer Mental heath sick days (just as we would physical sick days), please do not judge our people for taking time out during or after a pandemic to work on their mental health - there is no stigma attached to this. You called it ‘burn-out’ that is not a helpful word to use when talking about Mental Health. 2. We work with our clients to recruit through a DE&I Lens this is not a ‘claim’ it is what we do 3. Diversity & Inclusion is at the core of our purpose and why we founded the business - to create sustainable change both in our industries and for our clients 4. We recognise all our people for exceptional work - both through our bonus scheme and our internal ‘shout outs’ it’s embedded in our weekly all hands, we believe in telling people when they have done great work, and we ask our people to do this too, it doesn’t just come from management 5. We talk to our people all the time about setting your own boundaries and making sure your life/work balance is right for you, we even offer an early finish on a Friday at 3pm to make sure you have space between work and your weekend. We work flexible hours, and trust our people to manage their own time - we don't ask people to commute during peak hours if going onsite or to the office and our hybrid working approach means you can set yourself up for success around your own life comittments. 6. We do bring in outside speakers every quarter to host workshops and have our own DB&I committee that focus on the inside of our business and how we can improve - they are there to hold us all to account and make sure we are also ‘doing the work’ ourselves 7. We have hired some incredible people that are on this journey with us to create change and do ‘good work’ 8. We are still a relatively small business with a big mission, so we do need to all muck in at times, for some people that is a great opportunity to develop their skills, for others it is too much - we are all very different.
