Pros

The other faculty members are great

Cons

The Mastery School of Hawken is a scam. There are no grades and no standards. It is all made up with fake words for classes and credits. The administration says that their way of teaching is cutting edge but they are making it up. The kids run wild. The kids ignore you. They skip and leave campus all the time. The kids refuse to work but you are told to lie to their parents and tell them that they are amazing students anyways. The parents do not realize how little their kids are learning. The Mastery School is nothing like the main campus. Admissions fills it with kids who are on the waitlist for the main campus so they can still take their money when they can't get into main. Every day you are scamming the kids and telling them that they are brave for learning in a school without grades but they are really getting half the education and half the content they would get at a public school. The administration plays mind games with the faculty and tries to hide this from the main campus and parents. They will bully teachers and make them feel terrible which is why the campus has very high turnover compared to the main campus. It is really sad because the teachers here are trying very hard and some of the kids want to learn. The kids know something is wrong but they are "de-schooled" and told by administration that they are wrong, that this is normal and to be grateful so many times that they give up. It is not normal. The kids are right to be worried. They are being fleeced. Before you apply find one of the teachers still working there and talk to them privately. They will tell you to RUN before the administration grinds you down too

Pros

The school stays on its mission and 98% of the staff is on board working together towards this common goal. Everybody helps out and is understanding about your workload/availabity.

Cons

The 2% that are not on board can make your job stressful, but they are quickly weeded out and usually don't make it to the next school year.

Pros

colleagues are wonderful and supportive

Cons

Cleveland.com just published the head of school's salary... it makes that teachers' salaries feel even sadder. There's pay both gender and departmental pay inequity and pay inequity between people who have been there for years and new hires.
