Pros
Harris County Hospital District pays a fair compensation for the jobs at hand. HCHD, outside of IT, is a great place to work. People are very friendly and while there are some locations which are dilapidated, many of Harris County locations are very nice. HCHD is a challenging place to work but it can be rewarding just the same.
Cons
There are many people in other departments who really like their job. However, in IT this is a different reality. Everyone from employees to middle management work hard to make HCHD a better place to work. The IT executives create a hostile work environment. They demoralize employees in meetings and frequently talk about employees behind closed doors. There have been numerous people leaving IT in various groups. I have personally seen many qualified project managers, IT directors, managers, and various technical employees leave with a bitter taste of HCHD. It has been mentioned for several years that if the senior executives in IT left, HCHD could be a great place. There are many talented people who do not receive recognition nor salary adjustments for their exemplary service. In IT, there is definitely a good ole boy network. If you are not part of this small team, you will be ostracized . Ask any ex. HCHD IT employee and they will provide you with the same feedback. I am just extremely happy to have left on good terms as one day I would like to return but only if the 3 executives within IT leave or asked to leave.
