Pros

Initially I was under the impression that they were a promising venture. This was initially due to a recommendation of a former cooworker of mine, and then furthered by HST principals only real skills: deception, and manipulation.

Cons

The negatives are too many too mention. When the veil is dropped, it becomes clear that every word and every action is based in the gross incompetence of the two principals. Both spend their days managing the appearence of their startup (now at year 8+ of incubationary angel funding, at least its 4th wave of staffing, and umpteenth mission statement redirection ) by inflating a facade with the vapor of so much steaming excrement. During my association with the pair, the direction changed on a monthly basis, the two were never in sync on what the mission was. I tested this to confirm. Long and short, while the two can talk a game, they are effectively clueless on even the basics of solar energy science and technology.

Equity may be limited as the company is not in the early stage.

Pros

HST has built successful and creative software around optimization and automation of large-scale solar plants. The tech behind this is quite impressive. The companies that license the software are some of the largest solar developers and EPCs in the world. Also, because of the small team, it is possible to wear many hats and learn new skills that might not be available in larger organizations. Work atmosphere continues to be relaxed with a focus on software R&D. Both of the founders are very friendly and easy to get along with.

Cons

The small team size makes it difficult to develop software as quickly as desired. Additionally, HST does not offer the full benefits package that most companies offer (although they do try to compensate for this through higher salaries). This may change as investment increases and the team grows. Some bootstrapping through contract engineering and design work continues to be required to help support the funding of product development.
