Cons

I have never worked in such an awful environment wuth such toxic staff. Theres lots of whispering, back stabbing and drama which has created a "mean girl" culture. Management are aware but don't take any action to resolve the issues and turn a blind eye. The assistant role in conveyancing is administration. Regardless of your experience or knowledge you will be doing entry level work and nothing much beyond that. Credit isnt given fairly its based on favouritism. I was sold the perfect role with promises of progression which were all false. There was no training provided, I sat there for a week twiddling my thumbs begging for work! Skills and knowledge not utilised and I was left feeling unsure why I was taken on. The paralegal position does not exist and neither does flexible/hybrid working. I would not recommend this firm to anyone.

HCB Solicitors Response
1y
We were genuinely surprised, and disappointed, to read this review, as it does not reflect the culture, values, or working environment we foster at HCB. We take great pride in having created a supportive and professional workplace where all employees have the opportunity to develop their careers. Our management team is committed to ensuring that every staff member has the tools and training they need to perform their role effectively. Career progression is not only encouraged but actively supported, with many of our senior staff having worked their way up within the firm through hard work, dedication, and the right mindset. It is particularly disappointing to see claims that there is a lack of training and opportunity, as this could not be further from the truth. We invest in our employees, providing structured training, mentorship, and clear development pathways for those who wish to progress. We take workplace culture and employee well-being very seriously. Any suggestions, comments and/or concerns raised by staff are always listened to and addressed appropriately. Our leadership team remains committed to ensuring a positive, professional, and inclusive working environment for all. We appreciate all feedback and remain open to discussions with any employee who feels their experience has not met their expectations. However, we also stand by our commitment to fairness, transparency, and investing in people who are willing to grow with the firm.

Pros

Parking is good, reception is helpful

Cons

Lack of Work, Poor Management, and No Career Growth I joined the Education department hoping for a stable role with meaningful work. Unfortunately, in three months I was given only one piece of work, despite repeatedly asking my manager for responsibilities or clarification. When I raised concerns about the lack of work, I was made to feel as though the issue was my performance, even though the work I completed was approved by the courts. There was noticeable favouritism, very little guidance, and no real opportunities for development. The environment felt discouraging and at times bullying. I had left a stable job to join this company, so I tried to make it work, but ultimately I was let go on the same day my manager finally admitted that work “just isn’t coming in.” Seeing that they are hiring again for the same position, I feel it’s important to share my experience so others can make an informed decision. Poor communication, unstable workload, and unclear management expectations made this a very difficult place to work. I wouldn’t recommend this role to anyone looking for stability or career progression.

Pros

An incredibly supportive firm prioritising internal career progression and offers many routes to qualification for aspiring lawyers. Specialising in Education, Family, Private Client and all aspects of Conveyancing to name a few. The Directors and senior management are a breath of fresh air. Approachable, friendly, supportive and forward thinking ensuring investment into the company which is evident from it's growth within the last 10 years. The company offers a wide range of benefits including a fantastic incentive to achieve bonus leave days when targets are met. Office environment is friendly, with open plan working areas to ensure engagement between colleagues and dedicated areas for socialising at break times. There is also a great social committee.

Cons

Nothing to note- HCB has a positive working environment.
