Pros

- Ethical business. We're honest and transparent with our service, and since we serve mostly tech startups, there's a lot of job satisfaction in seeing our clients do amazing work and knowing that we have helped contribute to the tech scene. - Empowerment. I know it's cliche to say "be the change you wish to see in the world", but it's mostly true here. We run an advice process that encourages individuals to consult the team and make decisions based on the advice. Much less bureaucratic but not without challenges. That is the nature of decision making though - not everyone is going to like every decision. But, it is empowering. If you don't like something? Change it! - Wholeness. Prior to GrantTree, I always felt that being professional meant I wasn't allowed to show emotions in the workplace. Even if I was going through major personal problems that made me sad or depressed, I felt I had to soldier on and not let it impact my work. That's not the case at GrantTree. We're humans and we go through the vicissitudes of life, and here I'm supported by a team that consider my well being a priority. I'm allowed to be open (or to not be open if I don't feel comfortable sharing details of my life), and there are always people who are willing to jump in to offer help. That's my favourite part of the company.

Cons

- Self-management can be difficult, so can making decisions. Stepping up on controversial topics can mean stepping into land mines of confrontations. - With only literal career progressions, it can feel quite directionless when the work becomes less interesting. It is also less satisfying when there's no manager that regularly acknowledges your good work.

We're working on the topic of career progression all the time. Here's an extract from guest blog post we wrote for Unicorn Hunt that gives more of a flavour: "We really care about personal growth. It’s not an added extra for us. We see that there are opportunities in everything we do at work to learn about ourselves, take on new challenges, and get out of our comfort zone. In fact we think that this sort of personal growth is a key driver of business growth. The more our team is able to do, the more we are able to do, so we don’t want to put a speed limit on people’s development. Our kind of people always take ownership of their work, however big or small a piece of the business it is. They don’t want to be put in the narrow box of a job description. They crave room to spread out, and believe that the biggest obstacles to overcome are the ones inside their own heads. Career progression at GrantTree is not about a straightforward ladder to climb, it’s about forging your own path." (We can't link to the blog post here as GlassDoor doesn't allow links in company responses - sorry!).
