Pros

A company with a genuine reason for existing. Some good people trying to make a difference. Reasonable salary benchmarking and competitive benefits packages. Flexible working. Lunchtime sports groups.

Cons

A chaotic, disorganised approach lacking any coherent strategy - the focus of the business changes every few months, and is explained as a 'changing market', but really the business lacks clear strategic and commercial direction. The CEO/Founder is, as many reviews have referenced, controlling and micro-manages the teams below. As a result working here often lacks real authority or responsibility, and ultimately it's about keeping the CEO happy. The trap door culture still exists (despite claims to the contrary) and if you don't agree with the Exec Team and CEO, you're in a vulnerable position. There are a few highly influential members of the business who will input into/control projects and workstreams outside of their expertise, to the detriment of teams responsible for them. This leads to a lack of empowerment within the business as only certain people are listened to. The office is tatty and unsuitable for the number of staff working there, although a new office build is planned which should address this issue. There is no real development, training or career progression; outside of the regular restructures which occasionally create an opportunity to change role. There is no real focus on developing people through the business or attempts to retain talented team members.

Good Energy (UK) Response

We're sorry that you view us in this way – our culture and performance expectations do not suit everyone – which is why people occasionally leave us. There can be various reasons why someone moves on - which can relate to business changes, performance and personal circumstances. And we have to respect people’s privacy when they leave the business. Our strategic direction is clear as we continue to expand our offer from clean energy supply to services designed to help UK businesses and householders to understand and manage their energy use. We believe the best development comes through role growth and experience - in 2018, 1 in 6 of our people had development moves or promotions. We also believe good leaders can operate across functional boundaries, which is why they often drive a variety of cross functional projects. Our offices are indeed ‘modest’, whilst we build our new green HQ – but small touches like free fruit and plenty of working flexibility, are really appreciated by our people. Our new HQ will provide us with an inspiring home in a highly sustainable, purpose built space.

Pros

• Supportive culture — The people at Good Energy are genuinely friendly, welcoming, and passionate about what they do. • Strong mission — The company’s commitment to sustainability and doing the right thing for customers is real, not just a slogan. • Flexible and understanding management — My manager was supportive and always willing to help when I needed guidance. • Positive work environment — Teams collaborate well and there’s a genuine sense of wanting to improve things.

Cons

• Role fit — The role ultimately didn’t align with my strengths or the type of work I’m best at. • Pace and structure — The environment can be fast‑moving and process‑heavy, which won’t suit everyone.
