Pros

Remote-first culture, solid benefits and an interesting product.

Cons

GitLab is loosing its focus and the direction does not feel positive. The culture described in the public handbook no longer reflects reality, and many established processes are no longer being followed. There has been a dramatic cultural shift since the new sales leadership took over in APAC. Favoritism has become obvious, and people who bring ideas or challenge outdated thinking are routinely ignored, while those who simply align with leadership are rewarded. Shifting strategic priorities and rolling out a new sales strategy is understandable, but the way it is being imposed is alienating teams and pushing talent away. Leaders without the necessary people-leadership or industry experience are being elevated, and it’s hurting morale and culture instead of inspiring performance. Middle managers and directors seem under huge pressure to hit numbers and build pipeline, and instead of better direction and support, it feels like the default response is to look for someone to blame. There’s little real listening happening, and execution has become reactive and inconsistent. On top of that, diversity and inclusion are noticeably lacking, leadership promotions overwhelmingly favor men, primarily white, with limited effort to broaden representation.

Pros

OK pay or benefits in the market. Fully remote. Still is trying to frame itself as a big player.

Cons

Leadership went from being collaborative, communicative, and transparent, to being mercurial, secretive, and out of touch with the actual work. OBSESSSES over your AI usage metrics - even if AI doesn't help you and slows you down. The current layoff in progress was communicated poorly and not planned at all. And now they want us to adore the leaders and the company? Cultish vibes. We went from a company that plans ahead to a company that reacts.
