Pros

I'm very lucky to have a great job in my research area that supports me in my personal research as well as in advancing their aims; not all grad assistants are so lucky. I love my work and I'm quite happy with most of it. My job is somewhat flexible but I do have to put in desk time; I get the sense that I am in the minority of grad students on this.

Cons

As a student who also works you will work VERY hard. There are almost no "easy" assistantships here as some schools have. Also you work 13 hours a week plus take 3 very hard classes. In many ways it's easier to take 4 classes if you can afford it. We are also underpaid compared to many assistantships.

Pros

- Free Housing - Meal Plan - One of the better on campus job for students in my opinion (still able to be involved in other activities as a student on campus)

Cons

- Duty part of the job (Being on call and getting late night lock outs but this is rare), and definitely can still do homework in between doing duty rounds - experience can also depend on your hall director / area (but regardless still served on great RA teams, can be great if you have a co-ra but also been good at time being a single RA on the floor (no need to coordinate schedule if you do events together as a single RA unless you alternate events with your co)
