Pros

Remote work, smart and caring colleagues

Cons

Genome Medical has a toxic culture and work environment. The negative reviews by genetic counselors in March and April 2023 reflect the predominant opinion among the clinical staff. Upper management says they value their employees and that employee satisfaction is a top priority, but they've taken no action internally to address concerns. Micromanagement is rampant. High-level leadership pretends to welcome feedback with no intention to act. Negative or constructive feedback from employees is spun into a fake positive or ignored completely. I've heard that employees have been explicitly told not to ask questions or provide constructive feedback in meetings. Seeking an understanding of clinical decisions from management has led to reprimands, compounding the culture of fear. I've also heard that employees who resigned with notice due to the toxic environment have been censored in what they could say to their colleagues before they depart. Benefits have been slashed, including an enforced cap on PTO which employees do not accrue. This major benefit is being advertised for recruitment. Caseloads have increased substantially with no additional pay. The pursuit of profitability/market sustainability at the expense of genetic counselors’ well-being and patient care is misaligned with the central tenets of genetic counseling. If additional revenue is needed to make the business case, the company's response shouldn’t be to overwork and undercompensate its current employees. There is resentment and disengagement among the genetic counselors, who are the heart of the company. This shouldn’t be a surprise to management--surveys soliciting employee engagement provided it loud and clear. The CEO and other C-suite executives have been silent. In response to criticism of the hasty changes enacted in the past eight months, senior management has told employees "This job isn't for everyone”. Well, this job isn’t for any genetic counselor who wants to provide true genetic counseling or anything beyond being a billing encounter generator.

Pros

Working from home and the benefits were nice

Cons

This company takes full advantage of its intake coordinators/GCAs… period. The company thought it was a great idea to lay off more than half of its employees in January 2025 and to operate on a skeleton crew. It went from a nice, WFH job to a literal sweat shop. I also was forced into a call center role for half of my days, which was never a responsibility that I had before. I honestly think certain people are only staying because it allows them to WFH and take care of their kids. Since I have none… see ya!
