Pros

The C4 group in Scottsdale had an excellent 10 yr run but now things are dismal. Layoffs started in May 2011 and have continued to the point where I think the place will eventually shut down. I had a good time and left before things completely fell apart. Generally I worked with good people and, while my immediate manager was marginal at times (I had several different ones) the next level manager was very good and accessible.

Cons

I think the senior leadership got complacent and didn't think anyone could compete with them and kept padding contracts and started getting lazy with deliveries and quality. As is usual with companies it takes a while for all of the cracks in the foundation to cause serious damage and once it does it is tough to recover. They started to lose contracts and of course the layoffs, benefits cut backs began and have continued. Manager seems to want to blame defense cutbacks for their problems but when you lose contracts it isn't just the cutbacks. The cutbacks just provided the spark to the fuel that management poured on themselves. I tried bringing in inefficiencies a number of times but no one cared. They figured if they could have an engineer do documents for 6 months and they government would pay for it why try to do things in less time. Well I guess they now know why. Sad.

Pros

Good work life balance Projects matter for our war fighters Most co-workers are competent and dedicated More work than people, and moving to other engineering jobs is possible

Cons

Some numbskulls seem to get into senior positions. A "Consolidation" of buildings is underfunded, poorly planned, and drives chaos. The push to squeeze every nickel of efficiency means that there isn't always money for equipment or team building events (below the VP level).
