Pros

Strong exposure to a wide variety of project types, scales, and phases of work. Opportunity to work directly with senior leadership and gain responsibility early in your career. Collaborative and supportive team with talented designers and technical staff. Small office environment allows employees to have a meaningful impact on projects and company operations. Flexible work environment with good work-life balance compared to many firms in the industry. Diverse portfolio spanning landscape architecture, urban design, campus planning, and mixed-use development. Employees are encouraged to develop both design and project management skills. Direct client interaction and consultant coordination opportunities that accelerate professional growth.

Cons

As a smaller firm, some processes are less formalized than at larger organizations. Career paths can be less structured compared to large corporate firms. Workload and priorities can shift quickly depending on project needs. Employees who prefer highly specialized roles may find themselves wearing multiple hats.

Pros

GLS works on a broad range of Project Types with meaningful impacts. Employees will given a broad range of responsibilities and opportunities which may not be available in larger Landscape Architecture companies and will quickly advance their skill set significantly. The Design is consistently solid with an attention to detail that exceeds what standard "Landscape" companies can attain by allowing and accounting for an interdisciplinary approach which draws on a broad spectrum of the Design Professions. Whether working on affordable housing, a local park, new streetscapes, healthcare facilities or a University campus, GLS applies the same commitment to design excellence and rigor to build award winning Projects.

Cons

Being a small business and maintaining high standards means that employees will be expected to work on a significant quantity of Projects and devote a decent amount of time to each. While not necessarily strictly a con, there is a high level of responsibility required. However, the work is ultimately rewarding with built projects demonstrating the quality of the design and implementation and users enjoying the end results.

Pros

GLS is a small, highly design focused studio working on complex public and institutional projects across the Bay Area. Because of the size, everyone has meaningful responsibility and direct access to leadership. There is no hiding behind layers of hierarchy. You are in the room with clients, consultants, and decision makers. The work is thoughtful and conceptually rigorous. The firm values strong ideas and long term impact over trends. Team members are trusted to lead portions of projects early in their careers and are given space to grow. The culture is collaborative and intellectually curious. We work hard, but there is a strong respect for design craft and professional development. If you want exposure to entitlement strategy, public process, and high level design thinking, you get it here.

Cons

Because we are a small studio, you have to be comfortable wearing multiple hats. There is not the same level of administrative infrastructure you might find at a very large firm. Expectations are high and you are expected to take ownership.
