There are still traits of nepotism. But that is to be expected with a job like that.

Get to work on some interesting projects. Laid back environment Too big to fail, so safe career choice if you want to stay in the same job for years.

Lower pay than most other departments. Career progression is slow and painful unless you're in with the management clique or related to one of them. Meeting culture is rampant. Pay is restricted by paygrade and the internal skills framework, which feeds into bad pay combined with poor opportunities to progress careerwise. Absolutely runs counter to how the rest of the civil service is operated.
