Pros

Hi! I'm not sure if I count as I'm the founder and CEO, but here's my take. Expensify can be an incredible place to work, if you meet a few criteria. First, you have a strong natural talent and can absorb knowledge from all sources, without a lot of supervision. Second, you have a genuine humility that enables you to work well in a team of equally talented people with minimal corporate structure. And third, you have a true passion for you own life that enables you to use your time at Expensify as a stepping stone to your long term ambitions. If you have these three criteria, you will love Expensify and the people who work here.

Cons

The above "pros" sound great and obvious, but the actually create some very significant downsides. The first is that there isn't a lot of structure here. That means if you need a lot of formal training, close supervision, or a high degree of external motivation -- you'll be disappointed and frustrated. Our interview process is very rigorous and generally screens for this, but nothing is perfect. The second downside is we are extremely pragmatic in every decision we make, which means we pay no attention to "best practices" and instead do whatever makes sense for us based on our own judgement. That might sound great in theory, but in practice most people who quit Expensify do so because they are frustrated we don't do things in a more "standard" way -- whether that's our hiring practices, our technical decisions, our internal processes, etc. If you feel very convinced in the the "correctness" or "obviousness" of something but can't argue that persuasively to a group of skeptical peers, you will likely feel very frustrated and ignored. And the third of those is that we have no respect for authority. It sounds great to say we don't care about your history and evaluate you on your merits, but if you have a lot of experience that you expect to be accepted automatically -- again, you'll be very frustrated. Everybody in the company has started "at the bottom" and was promoted from within, so make sure you're ok with that before you start. The reality is, Expensify is a terrible place for most people to work. But it's an incredible place for *some* people to work, and we're ok with that -- for better or worse.
