Pros

The main pro was access to the gyms and swimming pools all over the country - and the discount on sportswear and swim accessories, and food at the cafes. I also worked a zero-hour contract so I was able to fit the job around my other commitments. The main reason I stayed for many years was the relaxed work environment and the coworkers.

Cons

The major downside was pay - I was often paid incorrectly, entire shifts not paid, none of the managers knew how holiday pay worked and tried to tell me I wasn't entitled to it (until I printed out the government advice regarding holiday pay). The majority of the staff are very young and it's their first ever job so they are sadly taken advantage of and not paid properly, so they leave after only a few months. The sites themselves have issues with supplies and I often worked entire weekends where we were unable to replace toilet paper in customer bathrooms, or clean them because equipment was broken. Some of the centres are in horrible neighbourhoods and not enough is done to protect staff from verbal and physical abuse from the public - banned members just come back next week to pick more fights.

Pros

Large company with options to relocate around the country, if you wanted to. Very good with health and safety procedures, majority of processes ready to be implemented.

Cons

Very sales driven. Targets, KPIs and profits are prioritised over colleagues and members. Sales team expected to give up personal time on end of month. You're expected to check and respond to emails when you're off or on annual leave. The company is very clique, you don't really progress unless you know someone in a senior role. Salary is always advertised as 'competitive' however, the pay doesn't justify the work you're required to do, or the extra time you work without pay. It's frown upon to claim for time worked outside of your contracted hours. There is no such thing as work life balance: you're expected to work day all the time and not be paid for it.
