Pros
There are two main reasons why I love it here. One is that the CSO Jason Meyers encourages friendships among his employees. He does this via a company sponsored happy hour every week. This give you a chance to really get to know your fellow employees and I have made several good "real" friends at work (I've also taken on some extreme hobbies, thanks to the adrenaline junkies so common in the Rockies!). The second is that the products we sell and the software we produce, can actually help extend peoples lives! Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside when I think about it, as my main goal is life is to leave this planet a little better than how I found it. And people care. I went to a conference to advertise our kits (a test to determine oncogenic mutations) and people couldn't get a custom kit fast enough. I've never seen that level of enthusiasm for anything besides the latest iPhone (OK OK, not that bad, but lots of people wanting these kits fast!!!) But really, everyone here is just awesome (not everyone is a rock star, but the culture is very positive and everyone gets along very very well). The molecular biology side is filled with curious scientists who love figuring stuff out. A class to teach command line skills for doing simple informatics on a linux box is being given by the Bioindformatics team, and EVERY single lab scientist signed up. It's refreshing to see that level of enthusiasm from lab scientists to learn how to process big data. The software side, which I'm a part of, gets their kicks from progressing the commercial side as well as keeping R&D humming. Plus they are a bunch of maniacs. But in a good way.
Cons
Start up environments have their pros and cons. If you want a cushy 40 hour a week job and don't ever want to be contacted outside of those times or even think of work outside of those times, this may not be the place for you. As we grow (especially the software team) things are settling down significantly, I will admit the timelines are not as aggressive as when it was just 3 of us (Now 8), but near deadlines we do have to hustle from time to time.
