Pros
The coworkers were great. Environment Oregon does a good job at advertising the gig as a place where you can make a difference and fight on a daily basis against the "leaders" of this world. So that being said, the people who are interested in doing something for our environment and get involved politically are probably people you'll get along with if you are also compelled to give it a go.
Cons
Unfortunately you better make sure you get your coworkers numbers, hardly anyone sticks around for more than a week or two. And that's for a number of good reasons. Firstly, canvassing is a sales job. You are knocking on strangers doors, many of whom do not want to be bothered, and trying to get the to support an organization they more often than not have never heard of. Going out and educating the public is a fantastic idea, don't get me wrong. However, the directors discourage you from speaking with people of different beliefs. They only want you to spend time with people who will give. This is ridiculous. A very generous donation would be around 200 dollars, or maybe something like 30 dollars a month. While that is wonderful, Bob down the street who can give 30/month is pennies compared to the millions someone in the oil and gas industry can drop to hire lobbyist and buy off politicians. One the most valuable and productive things a canvasser could do, is have a meaningful and respectful conversation with someone from the other side. People still need to talk, not just money. They also bank with Wells Fargo, so essentially every donation you get helps Wells Fargo out a bit which seems like a hypocrisy. On top of that, you'll probably get ripped off by the ludicrous quota system. You have to attain a certain percentage of email and cell phones if you want to make commission. For example: One week you could earn 1,000 and potentially make commission. If you made $250 from 4 people and 3 of them gave you their email and cell phones you are good. However, if you make $100 from 10 individuals, but only 5 out of the 10 give you their email and cell phones, you don't make commission even though you got an extra 2 emails and cell phones. Just be aware of this caveat when they tell you, you can make 15/hour. You also can't work part-time in summer. You probably are applying to this job because you love being outside and exploring Oregon. You won't be able to do that during the best season in Oregon if you want to keep this job.
