There is a complete disconnect between the good strategy developed by Eni executives and the realities at the coal face. Realities are buried as they rise through the management hierarchy, through the army of mostly incompetent southern Italian middle management who are incapable of properly grasping most of the concepts they are tasked with. One would have to be skeptical about the company’s prospects for a green transition in its current structure. HR have a disproportionate level to of power and could be compared to a type of secret police, to be feared and never trusted. I witnessed widespread workplace bullying and discrimination which is unfortunately imbedded in company culture and protected by the legions of middle management described above. Worst of all corrupt practices are tacitly accepted as business of usual in many of the territories Eni does business, despite the huge amount of resources (a smokescreen) devoted to counter it.
