Pros

The mission and uniqueness of the company is absolutely incredible! I was always proud to answer the question "What do you do for work?" whenever someone asked. I probably won't find that kind of pride anywhere else and I'll miss being able to answer that question. The people at Embark are top-notch and I know so many people would agree whole-heartedly. I never felt nervous to reach out to co-workers I had never spoken to before. Everyone is incredibly kind and everything you could ever want in a colleague. The benefits were incredible, insurance and unlimited PTO standing out the most for me.

Cons

The layoffs. Three rounds of layoffs over the span of a year that resulted in a total reduction of at least 50+% of employees. I never felt secure. I constantly wondered when the next reduction in force would be and if I would be next on the chopping block. I understand that so many companies are facing mass layoffs, but the frequency they are occurring at while at Embark was/is staggering. Cross functional communication is very poor. The CS Department, for example, is frequently in the dark and often left learning of UX changes from the customers themselves. This results in recurrent scrambling. Despite pay bands recently being made public, it was unclear why certain coworkers with the same job title were being paid more despite having the same education, same years and quality of experience.

Pros

Embark is an incredible place to work! You get to dive into a variety of projects, and the team is extremely tight-knit, fostering real opportunities for growth. Your voice is heard, and people genuinely value new ideas. Everyone is hardworking, open-minded, and excited to take on challenges—it truly feels like a family (or a dog pack!). The perks of working for a dog-focused company speak for themselves—who doesn’t love dogs? Plus, the benefits are excellent, with great healthcare, work-from-home flexibility, and an office in Boston for those who prefer in-person collaboration.

Cons

The office space is on the smaller side, but with the shift toward remote work, it’s been a smart and natural transition. The previous larger space wasn’t necessary for how the company operates now.

Pros

The team is genuinely passionate about helping pet parents understand and care for their dogs.

Cons

The CEO creates a toxic culture. He frequently gossips about his direct reports behind their backs and even to their more junior team members. This has created constant and significant churn among the executive team which leads to paralysis in the organization. The company is in a negative growth spiral and there is no coherent plan to correct it.
