Pros

If you’re reading this thinking of working at Elsevier be sure to ask your hiring manager careful questions about where in Elsevier you’re working - products range from ~2000s Perl/Java monoliths to state of the art and you’re experience at the company can be very different depending on what you land in. - Great relaxed/informal working culture. Working more than 7hrs a day is basically a total rarity, and you can largely work at your own pace. - Compared to other companies its size and age there is interesting work as the academic world is surprisingly lagging in technical systems - Again compared to companies its size takes development seriously - Generally speaking great colleagues who are attracted by Elsevier’s mission to promote scientific research for the good of all mankind (but especially its executives and shareholders) - Progressive (generous) policies around parental leave and working from home (although the offices are pretty good as well)

Cons

Elsevier’s (research products/technology) ‘original sin’ in my opinion in that it delivers software requested by people who do not use the software. A university will make a purchase of based on a checklist of features that the product must do. This means as a developer you’ll be working on (you guessed it) checklists of features. If you’re prepared to switch off and churn out disjointed and poorly thought through features you’ll be fine - if you’re reading this a potential PM/dev who likes to build cohesive platforms and target user problems directly Elsevier really needs you but be prepared for a battle to change this mentality. I’ve felt at times that PMs/BAs/Management have all morphed into different kinds of delivery managers only interested in how long features will take to be released which can be unpleasant if you want to build quality products. People internally often say Elsevier is a product driven company - that’s actually not quite the case in my opinion. It's actually Product Driven’s evil twin - a Sales driven company. Product development routinely works back from customer requests to the sales team - this means products can be littered with weird one-off requests and disjointed systems making organising projects difficult leading to tech debt and frustratingly slow pace of development Advancement in the company is too slow and good employees will get better offers from competitors in the time it takes Elsevier to do promotions. Essentially the company has a bit of a small town mentality in how it operates which isn’t appropriate for markets as competitive for labour as London and Amsterdam

On the process feedback: Leadership is actively reviewing operational workflows, and the advice to listen more closely to employee feedback is something we're holding ourselves accountable to. If you're open to it, we'd encourage you to bring specific examples forward through your team or people and culture contacts. Change is most effective when it's grounded in the real experiences of the people doing the work, and that means you. Pros

-Great company -Team has talented, experienced account managers and product experts who know the territory well

Cons

West team management is heavy on micromanagement and sets unrealistic territory targets without rep input — high turnover, and long tenure in company seems to shield this manager from accountability and growth
