Pros

They pay you a paycheck and there a few good people that keep the company afloat.

Cons

No matter what they say, money is always more important than people. Any claim otherwise is a lie. This company treats their employees and clients like garbage. The company will claim to care about their clients when it is time to sign or a renew a contract, then completely ignore their needs until it is time to sign again in a few years. "Who cares? The contract is signed so they have to pay us." The "People" (HR) department is a joke. They claim to care about the employees, yet their only purpose is to protect the company. The benefits are awful. Only a 3% maximum match on retirement, which is by far the worst in the higher education industry. The funds in the 401k plan are Vanguards worst performing funds. Any attempts at "providing additional benefits" for employees is a form of gaslighting. Your manager will refuse to have your back and never stick up for you. The C-Suite is completely out of touch with reality and stays in their own bubble without regard for the normal person. The products are terrible. The mentality is there is no reason to produce a good product since they have most of the market share. Every upgrade release has multiple defects. This leads to the client facing employees being hung out to dry by the development team. The "future" of the company's revenue is cloud based services that is run incompetently. The cloud team cannot think for themselves and does not care at all about their clients. In addition to bungling the cloud opportunities, the company refuses other, more realistic opportunities to help its clients. The company will ALWAYS do what is legal and not what is right. Keep that in mind if you ever get sick. Getting to Long-Term Disability is a guarantee for termination (it is in their policies!!!). They will lie to you and themselves by saying they “did you a favor” by not terminating you right after FMLA. Best of luck if you choose to work here, you are going to need it. May the odds be ever in your favor.

Pros

Ellucian had some genuinely brilliant people. I mean real talent. Smart engineers, sharp support people who could look at a broken system and somehow see both the problem and the political disaster hiding behind it. A lot of people there cared deeply about higher ed. They understood that colleges and universities are not just “customers.” They are institutions trying to keep students moving, faculty supported, and operations alive with systems that often looked held together by duct tape, PLSQL scripts, and institutional trauma.

Cons

Then there was the C-suite. Every company has executives. That’s normal. But this group often felt less like corporate stewards and more like LinkedIn influencers who accidentally wandered into an ERP company. They seemed distant. Aloof. Not deeply engaged with the actual work, the clients, or the people carrying the weight. There was a lot of executive polish, a lot of corporate language, a lot of “vision,” but not always the kind of grounded leadership that makes employees say, “I trust these people with the future of the company.” At times, it felt like the people closest to the customers understood the business better than the people paid the most to lead it.
