After nearly 10 years with Edenwald Senior Living, my employment there has come to an end. During that time, I worked my way through multiple roles, ultimately serving as both a Support Services Coordinator and Maintenance Mechanic. I took pride in serving our residents and supporting the community. Unfortunately, my final experience with the organization left me disappointed. Despite providing a two-week notice and working through my resignation period, I was informed that I would not be paid for my remaining 11.2 hours of accrued PTO due to a call-out during my notice period. Throughout my tenure, my responsibilities continued to grow, often requiring me to wear multiple hats and take on significant operational responsibilities. However, I felt that my compensation did not keep pace with those expectations. When I left, I was earning $23 per hour, only slightly more than I had earned years earlier, while new maintenance employees were reportedly being hired at higher starting wages. I was also involved with the organization’s DEI committee for a period of time. One incident that particularly concerned me involved a board member making a comment comparing Black people to apes in the presence of staff and residents participating in the committee. From my perspective, the response that followed did not adequately address the seriousness of the situation, and it left a lasting impression on me.
