Pros

Live in Florida and get high-level asset management experience.

Cons

Terrible support from management, sales, and trading where somehow the sales teams are overpaid yet anyone managing the portfolios that aren't part of the old boy's network is treated like a hassle and liability. This is genuinely a terrible work environment for investment professionals with all the portfolio managers out to make their own money and work as little as possible at the expense of the development of the analysts. Pay increases are promised and purportedly based on performance but unless you have an in with the higher-ups you are instead greeted with a list of excuses instead of what was promised. This is while top management makes a large multiple more than anyone else. Friends of the founder and former assistants to the Chairman enjoy impressive titles while barely showing up to work. I experienced a ton of both racist and sexist comments from the old guard who think that being over fifty and tenured with the company is a right to say and do whatever you would like. Most of the portfolio managers are checked out and leave most of the decisions to the analysts while giving none of the recognition and/or credit. I experienced numerous occasions when excellent work was stolen by portfolio managers while things that weren't an analyst's fault fall on them to keep their name unsullied. Turnover amongst minorities and women is particularly high. This place is in desperate need of an independent review as the nepotism on the sales team, management, and portfolio managers is truly extraordinary. Analyst beware. You will be underpaid, overworked, and made to feel like your needs should be minimized for the sake of the old white portfolio managers making over a million a year. Constantly put in a position where lying to clients was more the norm than the exception because company profits are put above anything else at the expense of meeting the client's needs and or desires. If you knew the founder you are untouchable so for those of you in that position, I would jump right in. The company is a huge fan of using scare tactics, intimidation, and finally mediation with Raymond James' expansive legal department to settle disputes in the company's favor. High performance is met with a downplay of an analyst's impact to keep pay and advancement opportunities low. Sales team is paid better than the analysts despite negative AUM and high turnover outside of acquisitions at most of the funds.

Pros

Good colleagues within the department. Direct supervisor was respectable with great understanding of big picture concepts and action implementation.

Cons

Often bogged down with the day to day details that did not need to be discussed as if it were a teenage gossip party. Also no real support for advancement within the parent company (RJF) and no real advancement opportunities within the department itself. Senior Mgmt of the company is typical old boy network which depended upon who you know and who you brown-nosed versus merit or performance.
