Pros

This organization would be a good fit for someone whose political orientation was far left, and anyone with a strong affinity for the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly those who identify as non-binary or transgendered. This organization promotes health-oriented curriculum targeting sexual and reproductive health, as well as substance abuse. They produce textbooks for high schools and partner with external agencies for smoking and alcohol cessation programs. Since the pandemic, this employer is 100% remote, with staffers scattered all across the country, but with a core group of senior staff located in Sacramento, CA. The Oakland office was closed due to the high rent in the Bay Area.

Cons

I was hired to fill a position that had been vacant for over a year and a half. The expectations for my position were never really explained. I was supposed to remotely manage five junior and senior staff, yet three of those people where siloed into projects with external agencies, and I had no idea what they were working on. The onboarding process was equally confusing and disorganized, with multiple broken links to training videos. I was simply thrown into the shark tank and expected to swim. I was supposed to meet weekly with my supervisor for updates and coaching, but those meetings were routinely cancelled due to other scheduling conflicts. When I wasn't in a meeting, I had no idea what I was expected to work on. Six weeks into my tenure, I finally had that meeting with my supervisor, and when the HR director came on the Zoom call, I knew I was going to be fired. There was no previous indication that my performance wasn't what they expected of me. I realize that with an "at will" employment, the employer has the right to terminate someone without warning. I can't imagine what I could have done in my initial six weeks that was so terrible that it merited a firing without explanation. I was simply told that "This is not a good fit for you" and that there had been multiple complaints about my performance, yet none were given any specifics. As others have alluded in their comments, I did once express some discord with the organization's political agenda, and perhaps that led to my demise.

Pros

ETR has been doing serious reflecting and implementing intentional changes and restructuring over the past couple of years to not only promote equity in our work but also across the company. I feel that leadership are genuinely interested in what staff have to say about how to improve equity, work-life balance, and overall wellbeing at ETR. They've also been responsive to feedback, including improving already wonderful and comprehensive benefits, supporting novel diverse strategic planning, and providing various and interesting ways to engage with colleagues outside of project work (a must when working remotely!). At ETR, I feel that I matter as a person, not just an employee, and I am encouraged to and supported in showing up as my whole self.

Cons

I don't have personal experience with this but have heard from colleagues that the promotion process can be a bit time consuming and some pathways are less clear than others.

Pros

Great location, good people in general

Cons

Some departments are terribly run, lots of micromanagement. It really depends which area you work in.
