Pros

Get to travel and work abroad

Cons

What Ottawa communicates to volunteers before departing is completely inaccurate. The marginalized youth of a country is not being supported nor is the focus on gender equality or environmental sustainability. The work place environment is toxic with passive aggressive communication being the preferred style among country staff. When concerns are addressed with Ottawa nothing is done and volunteers are advised to keep their mouths shut. The money the volunteers raise and Canadian tax payers dollars goes to support the relatively well off youth of the country while the marginalized youth are mot able to access the programs. The business that are started with YIF money mainly stop within the year of starting as most didn’t want to in the first place. As only ten of the 130 points needed to receive money are for gender and environmental sustainability, 99% of winners have zero concern with these areas. Local staff hind and falsify numbers that go to Ottawa. While doing monitoring and evaluation any data that makes the project look bad are removed. All in all it’s a numbers game that has little positive impact.
