Pros

Potential and Growing Business model.

Cons

ELR media group doesn't pay their interns but offer a hope of a full-time job. The company consists of 4-5 highly insecure people who doesn't believe in teaching their interns at all. They would tear interns more like a handyman. I joined them with a lot of hope of learning and enthusiasm but my reporting manager only asked me to set wardrobes which she loved destroying every day and cleaning their kitchen. Upon raising a concern she declined to answer any question I asked and even made sure that I couldn't speak to the top management. They are highly unprofessional and unethical team. I would suggest not to waste the most valued internship time with them as they might just end your internship in between and hang you in the storm to dry.

ELR Media Group Response

Thank you for your feedback. We are very sorry to hear that you did not have a positive experience with ELR Media Group, and we wish you would have brought it to our attention while you were still interning with us. Our interns never participate in any form of "handyman" work. We have a cleaning staff that comes in to clean the entire space, including the kitchen. With that being said, each team member is responsible for the maintenance of their work space(s) and is required to keep them organized and clean at all times. We also expect people to clean up their own food and wash any dishes they use. Because we often have appointments and meetings in our space, we work together to make sure that all common areas of the office are kept to the highest standards - this includes the organization of all client sample sets. The PR team receives a high volume of requests daily - so the upkeep of these sample sets is vital to our process. We will also have interns participate by helping pull samples for upcoming stories, and we will go through their selection to choose what items will be best based on the specifications we received. This should be seen as a learning opportunity and nothing else. ELR Media Group compensates all of their interns with school credit, which is brought to the interviewee's attention several times during the hiring process. We are a small company, which is something we pride ourselves on. The team works together on a number of projects and we are very collaborative in general, but sometimes this type of environment is not for everyone. In the instances where we feel that an intern or employee may not be benefitting enough from the role they filled, we will do our best to adjust their responsibilities to align with their professional and educational goals. However, each person that joins our team plays a pivotal roll in the agency, and in the rare times those goals do not align with the work we are producing as a creative agency, we will respectfully ask to go our separate ways.

Pros

I was an intern here this past spring for school credit and I completely enjoyed my time there. I'm actually surprised by all the negative reviews and I think those people are expecting far too much. I was never made to do housekeeping chores and I was never treated badly. I did occasionally go on sample runs but it was never on the verge of being anywhere close to exploitation. Like any job, there were busy days and slow days, some more than others. But I was given research projects and the opportunity to handle social media engagement for ELR's clients. I was regularly thanked and acknowledged by the full time employees and even the owner herself. My experience was a great starting point for what I hope is a future career in fashion PR. It's a very supportive environment and I sincerely hope the company is doing well still. Even now in a new PR intern position, the things I learned at ELR are completely applicable and sometimes I find myself missing the job!

Cons

Slow days in PR are SLOW Like any school/work balance, sometimes it could be hard and my wallet took a hit from the cost of commuting from NJ, especially since this is an unpaid position. I wish I wasn't as afraid to speak up more and ask for more tasks!
