Pros

My department is great. Work is challenging, although can be stressful.

Cons

Because the salary is so low, the only people who can afford to work here are 1. from affluent backgrounds and receive money from parents, 2. married with a wage-earning spouse, 3. receive income from another source (property, etc.). There are some of us who do not fall into those categories and are suffering for it. No savings, cheap apts., roommates. Not sustainable for long, so high turnover. Also creates a culture of affluent white, married middle class. Ironic considering the books that the press publishes. The "algorithm" formula used for salary is a fabrication. Yes, they use a formula, but many other factors have an impact, and that includes hard negotiating by some, that have created gross inequities in starting salaries. No room for career advancement in my department.
